Scientific Program - Call for Papers

The Conference Scientific Program Committee (CSPC) would like to thank everyone who submitted an abstract for inclusion in the OT AUSTRALIA 23rd National Conference and Exhibition 2008.  Over 420 abstracts for oral presentations, poster and workshops were received.
We are very excited about the diversity of the program and eagerly anticipate the conference.
Presenters will be notified of the success of their submission by: Friday 30th May

Review Process

Each abstract was blind peer reviewed by two reviewers and numerically scored using a standardised scoring system.  Where there was a discrepancy of greater than 3 points between the two reviews, a third review was completed by a member of the CSPC.  Shortlisted abstracts were individually reviewed by members of the CSPC.   The abstracts that were accepted for inclusion to the program were chosen based on how well they met the Conference themes:  to inspire, to explore and to take action.

Approximately one hundred abstracts were selected for oral presentations, ten abstracts were selected as in-conference workshop, and 200 abstracts were selected for poster presentations.  Due to the large number of abstracts submitted, only one abstract was selected as an oral presentation for any first author who submitted multiple abstracts.

What you can expect from the Conference Program

Presentations will address the following themes and topics

Inspire: Motivate and Encourage

Teaching and learning in all aspects of our profession is encompassed within this theme. You have the ability to inspire others by sharing your ideas and wisdom whatever your current role is within occupational therapy.

Explore: Discover and Investigate

Research and consolidation of theories provides the structure upon which our profession is based and continues to develop. This is an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing advancement of our profession’s knowledge and wisdom.

Action: Encounters and Achievements

The diversity of our clients and the environments in which we work provides us with a valuable opportunity for sharing our clinical experiences and expertise. This allows us to share ideas and current work practices and promote occupational therapists as experts in their field. Streams Topics and Keywords

To create a dynamic and engaging program for the conference, we will be offering a range of sessions, including oral paper presentations, panel discussions, key note sessions, pre and in-conference workshops, poster presentations, debate forums and research corner. We believe that this will facilitate greater knowledge exchange and sharing and allow more opportunities to engage in and discuss key developments in diverse topics covered by the profession of occupational therapy.

Oral Paper Presentation

The oral paper presentation is a great way of informing the audience of research, theoretical, professional or practice issues in a concise manner.Authors will have 15 minutes to present original and innovative work followed by five minutes of question time.

Poster Display and Poster Corner

The poster presentation involves displaying research, theoretical, professional and / or practice issues in a visual format. This is an ideal medium for complex visual information and allows personal interaction with the author. More than one author may be involved in the poster display.

Some poster presenters will be selected to participate in the 'Poster Corner'. Each presenter will have ten minutes in which to highlight key points and address comments and questions.

Skill Building Workshops

Workshops can focus on practice, theory, research, management and / or education. Each workshop is 90 minutes in duration. Workshop sessions are interactive and practical.

Research corner

This format provides an opportunity for researchers to share their innovative research ideas. New and developing research ideas, along with research that has not been completed may be presented. Participants are expected to comment and provide feedback on the research ideas presented. Each presenter will have ten minutes in which to present the research idea and to address comments and questions.

Expert Panel

The development of Expert Panels will be ‘hot topics’ that will be grouped together into a panel or round table discussion. It is anticipated that there will be between four and six papers in each panel, with one author presenting. Participants attending the session are expected to actively participate in the discussion and exchange views with all the presenters.

Post Conference Workshops

Workshops may be full or half day programs and offer an experiential forum in which to explore a topic in depth. A variety of presentation methods that are participatory and informal in delivery including interactive lectures, case studies, demonstrations and group discussion are encouraged.
